The Green Lantern Corps Podcast

Blue vs Red

Posted in Red Lantern Corps by mrread7 on November 29, 2008

Closing up Red Lantern month here on the spotlight. I wanted to just reflect on the month and looking ahead to the birth of the Blue Lanterns. I didn’t get to cover as much as I had hoped this month with the Red Lanterns. Mostly due to the delays on the main title due to Final Crisis. We honestly should have had part 2 of the chapter and learning more about Saint Walker and why having the Red Lanterns kill Sinestro and help bring the Blackest Night. I can’t really put much blame on things, delays happen and they have the best way to mess up with the best laid plans. I will say that December will be a much more quieter month here on the spotlight. I covered a lot with the members of the Red Lantern Corps and their powers and how they fit in with the Blackest Night. So, to be honest this month was a lot of fun and I now when I get to Orange Lantern Month in March. We’ll hopefully have less delays and I can talk more about the build up and who was involved with the Orange Lanterns. The next two months will be just the normal run of the mill here on the GL Spotlight. Though, the GL Podcast is right on track and we’re looking to do the show around the 14th of January. So, that is going to be something cool to check out here in the weeks ahead. So, I’m going to say that I hope everyone has a nice weekend and that they don’t get trampled shopping for the holidays.

Tales of Quill

Posted in Red Lantern Corps by mrread7 on November 26, 2008

As we get ready to carve the Thanksgiving Feast this weekend and I prepare for the end of Red Lantern month. I thought I should talk about Quill of the Five Inversions. The very demon that would help Atrocitus give birth to the Red Lantern Corps. Quill has been around for years and was the one who told of the Tales of the Blackest Night. As much as Atrocitus would like to say he did it all himself, it was Quill who started it all. I’ll let the good people at Comicvine tell the tale:

A demon member of the Empire of Tears and the being that planted the seeds of doubt into the mind of Abin Sur, ultimately leading to his death. Quill was bludgeoned to death while in prison.

Eons earlier, before the elders of Oa ascended to become the Guardians of the Universe, the galaxy was still prevalent with the powers of magic.

Among the most horrific practitioners was the Empire of Tears, deathless demons of pure evil. The Oans decided that it was the time for technology and science to rule and sought to eradicate the evil of the Empires magic from the universe.

Ysmault was the final battleground in their war. There, the Empire tortured those Oans who were not strong willed enough with visions of ghastly horrors.

The Oans prevailed in the battled however were unable to destroy their demon foes. The Oans chained down and crucified the demons on the surface of Ysmault and declared the planet permanently off limits to all.

Millennia passed until one day Abin Sur attempted to aid a badly damaged Ungaran starship that was sent careening to the surface of Ysmault. Ignoring the Guardians edict against traveling to Ysmault, the Green Lantern pursued the falling starship in an effort to save the lives of the many passengers on board.

Abin Sur located the damaged craft but was unable to locate its passengers. The entombed demons offered assistance to Abin, enticing him to free them. One of the demons, Quill of the Five Inversions, promised to give the answers to any three questions, free of charge.

After Quill answer Abin Sur’s first question the Green Lantern located a young Ungaran girl, the only survivor of the crashed ship.

Although still skeptical Abin Sur was intrigued by the demon and returned to ask Quill a second question about his own fate. Abin was told that he would die when his ring failed him during a crucial moment and that his successor would eclipse him to become the greatest of all Green Lanterns.

Now annoyed by the demons obvious trickery Abin Sur asked to know the fate of the Green Lantern Corps. The third question concerned the final battle of the Green Lantern Corps.

He was told a prophecy: “After untold millennia, The Weaponers of Qward, Ranx the Sentient City, the Children of the White Lobe, and the Empire of Tears would rise united against the Green Lantern Corps”.

“Sodam Yat, a Daxamite hailed as the ultimate Green Lantern, would perish battling the lobe-spawn. The planet-form Green Lantern named Mogo would be the last to fall as Ranx the sentient city explodes a blink-bomb within his core”.

Abin Sur laughed dismissively at the demons transparent attempts to rattle him and left the planet with the young girl, intent of wiping his mind of Quills nonsense. The demons reported laughed for nineteen weeks after he left, convinced that they had broken the strong willed Lantern.

Although he refused to admit it, the demons warnings deeply troubled Abin Sur. He began charging his power ring excessively, trying to ensure that it did not fail him as Quill predicted. He also began using a spaceship rather then his ring for long space flights and missions.

Quill’s actions would anger his fellow demon Atrocitus, who felt that Quill’’s machinations were short sighted. Atrocitus planned to escape after the Guardians transferred the two demons from Ysmault, to a less oppressive prison planet. Atrocitus blamed Quill for planting this idea into Abin Sur’s death and eliminating their change for rescue.

Quill was undeterred by Atrocitus’ anger. However Atrocitus bore a grudge. He had uncovered the power of the red spectrum of light and formed a red ring and power battery. This new weapon was powered on the emotion of hate and anger and needed to be anointed in blood.

Atrocitus raised the red lantern above his head and used it to beat Quill to death. The lantern was bathed in Quill’s blood which apparently unlocked its power.

Despite the fact that Quill now lies on a crucifix in front of the Red Lantern Corps Central Power Battery. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Quill or the other three members of the Inversions. After all, we don’t know who told the Manhunters to annihilate Sector 666.

The Red Lantern Oath

Posted in Red Lantern Corps by mrread7 on November 25, 2008

I thought I would look at a basic thing with the Red Lantern Corps today. Well, not that basic, it’s the Red Lantern Oath after all. They can’t power their rings without it. It takes more than blood after all:
“With blood and rage of crimson red…
…ripped from a corpse so freshly dead…
…together with our hellish hate….
….we’ll burn you all….
……THAT IS YOUR FATE!”

Now, with both the Green Lantern and Sinestro Corps Oath, their oaths reflect not only what they do but also with what they fight against. Both the Blackest Night and Blackest Day are the same thing as is the Brightest Day and Brightest Night. For the Red Lantern Corps, since their powers are based on rage and blood, it’s their unchecked anger that allows them to power up. They want revenge on those who have done them wrong. In this case, the Sinestro and Green Lantern Corps and those associated with them. They don’t care what happens, as long as their is revenge, that’s all they care about.

Waiting for those other Red Lantern Profiles

Posted in Red Lantern Corps,War of Light by mrread7 on November 23, 2008

Hello everyone, I hope the weekend has treated you well. My weekend has been pretty relaxing. I spent the weekend with my girlfriend’s family. I finally met her two nieces and sister and sold about 2 more comic book sets for my debt pay off. Since Red Lantern month is coming to an end pretty soon. Plus, the fact that the title is delayed until Christmas Eve. I’m just looking over the top three members that we are waiting to hear about because they sound and look so damn cool.

Dex-Star

The killer kitty as he’s come to be known by. He is one of the most lethal members of the Red Lantern Corps despite his small stature. He comes from Sector 1014 just like Green Lantern Corps members: B’dg and Ch’p have hailed from. He usually does the sweet innocent kitty look to lure his victims into a false sense of security. Similar to how Puss ‘n Boots did in the Shrek movies. Now what lead such an adorable huminoid cat into becoming one of the most lethal members of the Red Lantern Corps is unknown. Not to mention what members of the either the Sinestro Corps or Green Lantern Corps did him wrong is also mystery. It’s one though a lot of us are looking forward to learning about.

Antipathy

This warrior princess that is one of the few Red Lantern Corps members that actually uses constructs from their power ring is very unknown. There is speculation that Antipathy might come from Boodikka’s homeworld or might even be related to Soranik Natu. Since we see Natu fighting her on the two page spread of War of Light by Ethan Van Scriver. We know that Red Lanterns can make constructs if they focus enough but only have limited forms. So, Antipathy is really concentrating and has a very “hands on approach” to dealing with her enemies. She should have a very interesting back story similar to Bleez or Vice.

That Fish Guy

I’ve been obsessed with this guy since he first showed up on the War of Light spread. We do know he has some connection with both Hal Jordan and Sinestro. He is a very front line man and is very large in stature. We don’t know what sector or what race he is apart of. Geoff Johns has stated we will learn who he is very early on in the Rage of the Red Lanterns story arc. I’m thinking it has to do with part 2 of the story, which I’ve reported won’t be until Christmas Eve. I just want to know his name and story because he just grabs my attention. I don’t know why but he does. Outside the drill sergeant and that strange chalk skin member of the Red Lantern Corps, these are the top three that I and others are waiting for their back history. I’m upset I have to wait yet another month but at least it will be pretty soon.

Fear and Light must come together

Posted in blackest night,War of Light by mrread7 on November 20, 2008

With the delays going on right now with Rage of the Red Lanterns, I thought I would look at the prophecy of The Blackest Night saying that: “Fear and Light must come together if the universe is to survive.” Now, we know that Sinestro is a key in defeating the Blackest Night. However, we don’t know exactly how this is to happen. The Black Lanterns use the power of death, which is outside the emotional spectrum. Green is center, Yellow is right next to it as is Blue. Green is will power but also the color of life and while Yellow is fear and Blue is hope. The truth is, the center colors are about life and if Black is death. Then Fear, Will and Hope must be there but so must Greed, Rage, Compassion and Love. These are all the colors of life. Since the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps are pretty much the reason the other corps exists. It’s pretty simple, if two corps that were about to annihilate each other and then join together to save the universe. The other corps will follow. Hence, life will go against death and while I’m guessing at this, will create the White Lantern Corps and fight back the darkness and stop the Blackest Night and bring about the Brightest Day. The question is, how is this going to happen? The Green Lantern Corps isn’t going to be too happy with Hal Jordan and the rest of the Earth Green Lanterns if they help Sinestro and even worse if they then join the Sinestro Corps. The War of Light is about all 7 corps fighting each other. They all have their problems with each other. Despite the message of peace with the Indigo Corps, movements don’t always get along with “the man”. Plus, just because the Blue Lanterns will come to the Green Lanterns aids, doesn’t mean other Green Lanterns will want their help. Plus, several members of both the Red Lanterns and Sinestro Corps just want to kill and maim each other. Don’t get me on the Orange Lanterns, they just want everything, how are they going to get along with anyone else? It’s going to be a very interesting course of actions that lead to the Blackest Night and how Sinestro and Hal Jordan are going to emerge from the Rage of the Red Lanterns.

Vice, there will be no justice

Posted in Uncategorized by mrread7 on November 17, 2008

Today we come to one of the more prompt members of the Red Lantern Corps, the large warrior known as Vice. Vice is one of the front mans for the Red Lantern Corps. Vice hails from Sector 674, where his life mate was brutally tortured and killed by the cannibalistic Arkillo of Vorn / Coristeel used his massive strength to dominate the species of the planet and to feed. He was selected to join the Sinestro Corps for his ability to instill great fear. Vice enjoys killing both Sinestro and Green Lantern Corps member by using his upper horn to latch through the top of their skulls and use his bottom jaw bone to rip their heads off. He is as brutal as his life enemy, Arkillo. He continues to train through the Red Lantern Corps drill sergeant to become a better warrior. There will be more on Vice when the Rage of Red Lanterns continues this December.

Powers of the Red Lantern Corps

Posted in Uncategorized by mrread7 on November 16, 2008

Greetings everyone, I hope your weekend treated you well. Mine was pretty good, despite starting on the wrong foot on Friday. I turned around and had a great time with my girlfriend on Saturday. We headed up to Des Plaines and I met three of her friends up there and played some Wally Ball. For those who don’t know what that is, think like volley ball meets racket ball. I’m still sore from it but it made up for my lack of exercise because of my over time this week at work. So, to help with my sore shoulders and legs. I’ve decided to break down the powers of the Red Lantern Corps. Now, while the story is still ongoing and sadly issue #36 is delayed until Christmas (I was I was kidding). Now is the time to get things going before we move on to our next Red Lantern Corps member. So, sit back and those who are squeamish might want to turn away because the Red Lantern Corps are not for the weak of heart.

Red Power Ring

A red ring feeds on the rage of its user, and is charged by the blood of those the user kills. Red rings constantly emit words such as “Kill” “Rage”, “Pain”, “Hatred”, “Blood”, and “Burn”. Under the rings’ influence, Red Lanterns are able to regurgitate their own blood, (which the ring’s energy has replaced), at their enemy, albeit in a highly acidic form. The ring’s energy discharges from the ring as liquid which immediately bursts into a flame which can burn in the vacuum of space. The red ring’s energy can also corrupt the energies of other power rings. It is also known that Red Power Rings don’t really make constructs like other power rings. However, if a Red Lantern does concentrate on the task at hand instead of it’s pure rage. They can create small hand weapons to use in battle.

Spewing

All Red Lanterns spew hate from their bodies, which is the hot blood that their rings are fueled on. The tainted blood can burn through almost anything like acid. This has been shown by both Dex-Star and Vice as their spewing melted away the faces of two Sinestro Corps members. The spewing can also burn through a Green Lantern’s shields unless their rings are constantly powered. As shown with Saint Walker, thanks to the Blue Lantern’s power ring powering up Hal Jordan’s ring to almost unfathomable levels. It keeps the blood spewing in check.

Central Power Battery

Atrocitus is shown in the aftermath of the Sinestro Corps War to be the first to forge a Red Lantern power battery, utilizing the power of rage. He said that his first new victim would be the one who called himself “the greatest Green Lantern:” Sinestro, who had long since abandoned the Green Lantern Corps to forge a Corps in his own namesake. He also murdered Qull of the Five Inversions, a fellow member of the Empire of Tears before doing the same to the other three members of the Five Inversions. The Inversions’ blood caused the Red Central Power Battery to be forged. Their blood keeps the battery constantly going but the Red Lantern Corps needs the blood from it’s victims to keep the battery going. Without the constant blood, the Central Power Battery would become useless.

Blood Vision

Though only Atrocitus and Laira have shown signs of doing this. A Red Lantern can see a person’s blood line through a special vision. It’s actually a reaction from the red ring looking to fuel it’s own powers. A Red Lantern’s target seeks the person who wronged them and then intensifies the users power wield to take out the target.

That’s all I have for today, I hope everyone has enjoyed this look into what makes the Red Lantern Corps tick. I’ll be back in a couple of days to look at yet another member of the Red Lantern Corps.

Green Lantern Corps #30 Review

Posted in green lantern corps by mrread7 on November 13, 2008

Sins of the Star Sapphire: Empty Handed Heart part 2

The issue kicks off with an alien baby crying. Soon, a Green Lantern Power Ring reports that Green Lantern 1067 is dead and leaves to find his replacement. We then see the baby being picked up by a set of clawed blue hands. The person taking the baby tells the child to hush. That in a day or two there won’t even be a memory of his parents. We see the Sinestro Corps member, Kryb placing the child into her large cage like back with several other babies she has kidnapped and murdered their parents. She says that she will keep the children safe. We move to Sector 1416, the planet Zamaron and home to the Star Sapphire Corps. Guy Gardner, Arisia, Sodam Yat, the Scarred Guardian, one male and one female Guardian approaching the planet. The Guardians tell their escorts that Zamaron is awaiting their arrive. The Scarred Guardian goes on to say that the situation is delicate and they must stay on constant guard. Guy Gardner wonders if this is really a diplomatic mission or a spy mission. The Scarred Guardian replies: “That is a naive question. All diplomatic delegations are spy missions, Lantern Gardner.” Soon, three Zamaron Guardians appear and tell the Green Lantern Corps to follow them to the planet. As they pass the Star Sapphire Central Power Battery. They soon see crystal hands that are draining Sinestro Corps Yellow Power Rings. Both Sodam and Arisia realize that the Zamarons are trying to tell the Green Lantern Corps they have better ways of dealing with the Sinestro Corps and that they could do just as easily to them.

The Zamaron Guardians break off leaving the Green Lanterns waiting. The Scarred Guardian then tells Sodam Yat that the reason that he is here. Is that if the mission is to go south and they are taken prisoner. That he is allowed to unleash the full powers of Ion and destroy as much of Zamaron and the Central Battery as possible. They are soon greeted by Queen Aga’Po, the leader of the Zamarons. She greets them, telling the Guardians it has been an eternity since they last stood side by side. We move to Sector 1111, where Kyle Rayner, Soranik Natu and several other Green Lanterns are reporting to Salaak about a distress call at a local Lantern Sector House. They find out that the Green Lanterns of Sector 1111 are both married and have a one-year-old child. They quickly jet towards the Lantern House. Back on Zamaron, Queen Aga’Po gives them a tour of their base. The male Guardian tells her that they have been monitoring the Star Sapphire Corps for a while and that their burgeoning of power is causing them unease. Aga’Po expected as much, she knew they couldn’t ignore what they have been doing. The Scarred Guardian tells her that they want to settle this as diplomatic as possible and Aga’Po knows this. She tells them that she can read their hearts. The Guardians tell Aga’Po that they are being naive and irresponsible believing that “love” can save the Universe. Aga’Po and her sisters believe that while the Guardians of the Universe believe they can suppress emotions is what is their problem. That they are trying to “kill” love.

She goes on to say that the Green Lanterns around them would not be here if it wasn’t for love. The Scarred Guardian grows angry and tells them that allowing the emotions of the spectrum metastasize will mutate and spread that love will always be under internal and external attack. Aga’Po tells them that she pities them. They are now abandoning emotions and are now coming to grips with grief and fear. The Guardians continue to argue and Aga’Po has had enough of it. Guy Gardner calls a time out and wants to show everyone something. They later enter a large room where Sinestro Corps members: Fatality, Karu-Sil and Kiriazis are encased in crystal. She tells them that the Zamarons are trying to help them find love. Arisia tells them that they are just manipulating them. Aga’Po disagrees and explains that each one of them has a hole in their hearts that needs to be filled. They have gone to use fear a way of dealing with that hole. She tells them that Kiriazis was the lone person on a planet but she killed those who came to her because it was her nature. In time the Sinestro Corps trained her to use that fear she embodied and made her take that power out on the Green Lantern Corps and others. They can redeem her and they will. Everyone has had enough and want to leave. Aga’Po tells them that this is their planet and they choose who can come and go. They tell the Green Lantern Corps to leave, which they do. As they do, the Zamarons say that the Green Lantern Corps center will not hold. That it’s only a matter of time before the Corps destroys itself.

Back in Sector 1111 the Green Lantern Corps members in search for Kryb finally make it to the Sector House only to see the Green Lanterns there dead. Lantern Amnee is enraged that she flies directly into the Sector House and saves the child from Kryb. Who soon learns that Amnee is read to give birth in a month. Which saves Kryb the trouble of finding her later. However, Kryb is soon attacked by the other Green Lantern Corps members as the fight ensues the Sector House explodes in green light. Kryb tells them that nothing will stop them, but Kyle disagrees as the Sector House falls towards a nearby planet. Back on Oa the Guardians of the Universe believe that there is no stopping the Star Sapphire Corps in their quest. To keep things from escalating on their side. They intend to vote on the third new law in the Book of Oa. That physical relationships and love between Green Lanterns is to be forbidden within the corps. End of issue.

What a great issue, while Rage of the Red Lanterns is going on over in the main Green Lantern book. Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason are rocking Green Lantern Corps with the Star Sapphire Corps and the quest to stop Kryb. The details on how the Star Sapphire Corps works is pretty neat, and that the Zamarons are completely able to use the power rings themselves and not be over powered by the stones. I also love Queen Aga’Po, she comes across as an evil Ganthlet. I also like how she has an original piece of the Star Sapphire Crystal over her heart to draw power from the main battery. The War of Light is shaping up great. My only complaint is that I saw the third rule for the Book of Oa coming about 4 months ago. Oh well, sometimes you can just read into something.
