Green Lantern #45 Review

Love Hurts

In Sector 1313 a swarm of Black Lantern power rings swarm around Green Lantern, John Stewart. As he calls for back up, the Black Lantern, Pariah appears and tells him that: “worlds have died and worlds will rise.” Soon, the ruins of Xanshi are brought back together as a giant Black Lantern planet. Over on Zamaron, the home of the Star Sapphire Corps, Sinestro leads his various corpsmen in freeing their other members from the Star Sapphires. Carol Ferris struggles with fighting Terik as Queen Aga’po reveals that Carol has developed a immunity towards the Star Sapphire. That she is able to use it’s power without being completely consumed by it like she had in the past. Aga’po then says that Carol will be perfect to be the host for the Violet entity, the Predator. Meanwhile, as Kryb is set free Sinestro appears before Carol saying that she is a long way from home and continues to free his fellow corpsmen. The two begin fighting as the various Sinestro Corps members leave the planet. The two are evenly matched as Sinestro tells Carol that she should not be here and that she is a slave to her so called: “love.” That once again, she is doing it for Hal Jordan when he won’t ever repay her. Carol reveals that she chose to rejoin the Star Sapphires to help him and not to get anything else out of it. She then goes on to say that even he has “love” in his heart and then incases Sinestro in crystal. Meanwhile, back on Ysmault, the Lost Green Lanterns fight against the Red Lanterns. As Boodikka starts killing off members of the Red Lanterns. In an effort to restrain her, Atrocitus attacks them but they are soon interrupted by Black Lantern power rings that bring the various fallen Red Lanterns, members of the Five Inversions and finally Laira back to life as Black Lanterns.

Back on Zamaron, Sinestro ends up confronting that which he would choose to forget. It is revealed that years ago when Sinestro was Abin Sur’s student. They were constantly in battle with the Manhunters and Five Inversions. When they returned to Abin’s home, Sinestro met and fell in love with Abin’s sister, Arin. Who would go on to be the mother of Sinestro’s daughter and current Green Lantern, Soranik Natu. However, Sinestro also relieves Arin’s death and in doing so breaks free from the violet crystal and attacks Carol with full force. That he has wasted enough time and just take care of the civil war that has broken out in his corps thanks to Mongul. However, they don’t have much time when the various Sinestro Corps members that have fallen since the Sinestro Corps War return as Black Lanterns both on Zamaron and on Qward along with the Weaponers that were killed. Over on Odym, Black Lantern power rings swarm the planet waiting for someone to die as the Blue Lantern Corps struggles with the Orange Lantern Corps. Larfleeze over on Okaara watches from afar as his corps starts to free the Blue Lantern Central Power Battery. However, he is soon visited by various Black Lantern power rings that bring back all the people he has killed as Black Lanterns. Finally, within the pages of the Book of Black, Lyssa Drak watches as the stories unfold in front of her, as she calls out for Sinestro to save her. Scar, the Black Lantern Guardian tells her master that the rings have infested the various corps home worlds but the Indigo Tribe. She says that soon they will also be brought into the War of Light and the Indigo Light will be theirs. End of issue.

Great chapter for Blackest Night, while Sinestro and Carol take center stage. Larfleeze is about to receive a little payback and yes, Doug Mahnke draws a very creep Kryb and I can’t wait to see what Geoff Johns has in store with the Indigo Tribe.

The Predator of Love

Posted in Profiles,Star Sapphires by mrread7 on August 22, 2009

Hello everyone. It’s been a while but I haven’t had time to do a profile on anyone in a while. So, I decided that I would take a look at the Violet entity of the Star Sapphire Corps, the Predator. You might wonder just what this thing is or that it’s just some new character created for The Blackest Night. Well, the truth is, the Predator has been around for a while and it all started with Carol Ferris herself. When Carol Ferris was cured of her evil Star Sapphire persona, she developed a third subconscious identity, the male “Predator”. Deprived of Hal Jordan’s love at the time, Carol found everything she wanted from a man in the Predator – masculinity, strength, and care. Physically separated from Carol’s body, the Predator repeatedly appeared as a mysterious figure, protecting Carol’s beloved company Ferris Aircraft from the threats of Eclipso, the Demolition Team and Jason Bloch. He also established the company Intercontinental Petroleum (Con-Trol) to let her regain control of Ferris Aircraft. Finally, the Predator started to court Carol (who did not know that the Predator was a part of herself) and battled Hal Jordan for her love. Hal defeated the Predator and witnessed him merging with Carol into Star Sapphire.
Later, the Predator reappeared and revealed that he was actually an ancient parasite from the planet Maltus. With Jordan powerless, the Predator transformed Carol into a totally evil incarnation of Star Sapphire (who eventually murdered Katma Tui), and he impregnated Star Sapphire with a demonic entity.

Still later, Carol became the administrator of Extreme Justice’s Mount Thunder facility. Soon, both the Predator and Star Sapphire were completely separated from Carol, and Star Sapphire actually gave birth to the child. It was revealed that Carol Ferris and Star Sapphire are two separate beings, and Sapphire was not Carol transformed as had previously been believed, but some sort of energy-based being who inhabited Carol’s body. Shortly afterwards, the parents (Predator and Star Sapphire) were killed by Neron, who departed with their baby in his arms. (Extreme Justice #10-11)
An entity named (by Scar) as “the Predator” was later revealed (or retconned, if it’s in fact the same being) as one of the manifestations in the emotional spectrum; the living embodiment of love. The entity is shown being held by the Zamarons on their home world.

Brings new meaning to the word: “love bug.”

Green Lantern Corps #39 Review

Posted in blackest night,Blue Lantern Corps, green lantern corps by mrread7 on August 13, 2009

Fade to Black

Taking place during Blackest Night #1, after leaving Coast City and Earth behind. Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner head back to Oa to deal with the Guardians of the Universe sending them back to Earth earlier. They talk about what they did on Earth from Guy having a picnic with Ice to Kyle visiting Jade’s grave. Guy talks to Kyle about Jade and Kyle reveals that when he had looked into the Star Sapphire tiara not too long ago. It wasn’t Soranik Natu he saw, it was Jade, however he is falling in love with Natu. Guy tells Kyle to relax, he knows Kyle will always love Jade and that he has Soranik now and that he should try and be happy. The two soon run into Soranik and Princess Iolande who are returning from Korugar. They explain that despite the failing of Sinestro’s execution, they have been able to settle things down. However, when Iolande wants to reveal that Sinestro is really Natu’s daughter, she is kept quiet. As they approach Oa, Soranik and Iolande and shocked to see the protective shell gone but they have little time to reflect. Soon, their rings alert them of unknown power rings approaching them and they are swarmed by the Black Lantern power rings. Over on Daxam, the populace are killing off the various surviving members of the Sinestro Corps. Arisia tries to stop them but Senator Yat tells her they are cleaning their planet. With the power they now have, they can keep all “alien influence” off their planet. That includes her. Arisia punches the senator saying she is a racist bastard and that Sodam was right, they weren’t worth saving. She then takes off and approaches the Daxam sun, which shows Sodam Yat trapped in it. She tells him, that he was right and that she should have told him how she truly felt about him but can’t now. She then takes back off towards Oa.

Over in Sector 3599 on the Sinestro Corps member, Kryb’s home world. The various children she has stolen are crying out for her, saying they are hungry and are eating the various creatures around them. While over on Zamaron, Tekik is freeing Kryb from the imprisonment from the Star Sapphires. Back on Krogugar, Mongul and his members of the Sinestro Corps are taking over the planet. Saying they will remove the last of Sinestro’s influence and make the planet the home of the Mongul Corps. Back on Oa, as Guy, Kyle, Soranik and Iolande race back to the planet. They try to keep the black power rings from reaching the surface by they break through all their barriers and soon do the same to the Green Lantern Corps who are still on Oa. The rings make their way to the Green Lantern Crypt where Morro intends to fight them off with his dratures but they can’t not stop the rings and they bring back all the various Green Lanterns as Black Lanterns. Leaving the dratures to carry an injured Morro to safety and the Green Lantern Corps left to face the various Black Lanterns who were once their friends but nothing can prepare Kyle when a Black Lantern Jade jumps him saying: “It’s time for you to realize, kyle that… two hearts are better than one.” End of issue. A great tie in to Blackest Night explaining how Kyle and Guy and the various Green Lanterns got back to Oa when the Black Lantern power rings came. Also a nice follow up for the upcoming fight with Sinestro and the Star Sapphire Corps and Mongul. As for Daxam, no big surprise, we all saw that coming but how is Sodam going to get out of the sun?

Blackest Night #2 Review

Blackest Night part 2

In Ivy Town, the Atom receives a return call from Hawkman. The Atom explains that he understands why Carter is so angry with him. However, he also explains that when he first met his wife, she was the beautiful and intelligent woman. That he has spent so many years trying to understand the universe, he found someone who understood him and he found love. He just needs to find peace with that with her will. Carter tells him he understands and to head on over, despite the fact that both Hawkman and Hawkgirl has been turned into Black Lanterns. The Atom replies: “I’ll be right there.” Over in Gotham City, Commissioner James Gordan is visited by his daughter, Barbabra who brings him a cup of hot coffee. Jim tells his daughter that the night seems darker than usual and he has yet to hear from Batman and Robin. He says he’s having a feeling he hasn’t had since the original Batgirl disappeared. That it felt like some one has left forever and there wasn’t anything he could do about it. Babs tells her father that she felt the same way after she was shot and ended up in a wheel chair. That all the hard work she had to do was so tiring and felt like there were no light ahead of her. Yet, she remembered what a sign on a gym wall said to her: “No matter how dark the night gets, the sun still rises in the morning.” Since then, she’s always gotten up 2 hours before sunrise, gotten herself together and watched the sun rise. She loves her life, every single day of it. Jim calls her “amazing” and Babs replies: “Like father, like daughter.” At that instance, Hal Jordan better known as Green Lantern crashes into the bat signal.

Over in Amnesty Bay, both Tempest and Mera returned to Aquaman’s grave with several Atlantis soldiers to take the king back to oceans to be laid to rest with the other kings of Atlantis. However, when they arrive, they find the grave dug up and soon Aquaman appears before all of them as a Black Lantern and sees that they are all feeling fear before ripping out one of the soldier’s hearts and powering up his ring. Back in Gotham City, Boston Brand better known as Deadman hears all the voices of the dead as multiple heroes and villains are brought back to life as Black Lanterns. He soon sees a black power ring appear at his own grave site and he pleads with it to keep him dead but soon his body is brought back as a Black Lantern. Over in Washington DC, black power rings approach the graves of Hank and Don Hall the original Hawk and Dove. However, Don is viewed at being at peace and cannot be brought back as a Black Lantern, Hank on the other hand, is. Back in Amnesty Mera and Tempest fight Aquaman but are unable to beat him back. Aquaman tells Mera that she has to join them and have their son be brought back too. Soon, Black Lantern version of Dolphin and Tula attack Tempest saying that they were both his love. The remaining Atlantis soldiers try to fight their former king but Aquaman summons various sharks that kill and eat them. Leaving little hope for anyone. Later, at Boston Brand’s grave, the Spectre, Blue Devil, Phantom Stanger and Zatanna view the evil that is erupting around them. They are soon confronted by the Black Lantern, Pariah who unleashes more black power rings that attack the Spectre and turn his host, Crispus Allen into a Black Lantern and take full control of the Spectre who then replies: “I want Hal Jordan back!”

Back in Gotham City, as Hal Jordan recovers, the Black Lantern Martian Manhunter is busy attacking Barry Allen, better known as the Flash. Hal asks if he can use the commissioner’s car. While Barry continues to run circles around J’onn and dropping various chemicals around him. Hal soon appears with a police car and uses it to ignite the various chemicals burning the Martian Manhunter. Back in the bay, Tempest freezes Dolphin’s head with his powers and shatters it but it soon reforms and they pull out Tempest’s heart since his now feeling hope for them and is transformed into a Black Lantern. They then all go after Mera telling her to join them but she flees. Hal and Barry quickly regroup and plan on taking J’onn’s body back to Mars as more Black Lanterns rise around the universe, including Abin Sur. Soon, the two heroes are confronted with a reformed Martian Manhunter, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Elongated Man, Sue Dibny and Firestorm who intend to take out both of the heroes.

Once again, a great issue by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis. I also like there are already weaknesses appearing to the Black Lantern rings, they can’t bring back those who are at peace in both life and death. I am also surprised, that Black Lanterns can’t really power up until a certain emotion is felt from their victims. Lot’s of great stuff going on. The back up feature with Black Hand’s notes about Hawkman and Hawkgirl were very insightful. I’m looking forward to the next chapter dealing with rage.
